4 things to do after your adjustment

Opting to visit a chiropractor marks a commendable initial step towards enhancing your mobility and overall well-being. By taking this initiative, you embark on a journey to restore balance, alignment, and relief from persistent discomfort. However, it is important to acknowledge that your chiropractor alone is not solely responsible for helping you achieve your health goals.
In addition to receiving adjustments at our practice, it is essential that you actively contribute to improving your health and practicing self-care. One crucial aspect to consider is your post-appointment activities, which can either enhance or diminish the effectiveness of your adjustments. If you aspire to attain the best possible outcomes, it is imperative that you play your part. Let's explore the five recommendations we typically provide for individuals after their adjustment:
#1 Maintain proper hydration consistently. Drinking an ample amount of water after an adjustment holds significant importance. Why? Because when your muscles and bones are stimulated and mobilized, the body often releases toxins—a way of eliminating waste. If there is a substantial buildup of toxins in your system, it becomes even more crucial to continuously flush them out.
The most effective way to expedite this detoxification process is by increasing your water intake. Start by consuming a glass of water shortly after your adjustment and continue drinking more water for a few days thereafter. Once all the toxins have been eliminated, your body can commence the healing process. At this stage, you can return to consuming eight glasses of water daily to keep your joints hydrated and ensure proper bodily functions.

#2 Engage in regular movement.
After your adjustment, you may notice an improvement in your mobility. Your shoulders and arms may be capable of reaching greater heights, or you might experience newfound freedom in stretching your neck or back. This positive change is attributed to your body adapting to the correct alignment.
Nevertheless, this is merely a transitional phase, and without caution, your body can revert to its previous uncomfortable position. This is particularly likely if you remain inactive and allow yourself to remain immobile for prolonged periods. To prevent this from happening, the best approach is to stay active. Make every effort to maintain your progress by engaging in various activities. Regularly stretch your back, neck, and shoulder muscles to sustain your level of mobility.

Moreover, it is crucial to maintain proper posture in all your movements. Train your body to adopt the correct positions by being mindful of any awkward postures, such as slouching, and doing your best to avoid prolonged sitting, which gradually leads to slouching. If your job or hobbies encourage prolonged sitting (e.g., desk jobs, painting), it might be beneficial to switch to a standing desk. This way, you can remain active and change positions throughout the day.

#3 Dedicate time to your prescribed exercises.
After your adjustment, your chiropractor may recommend specific exercises for you to follow. Although these exercises may seem slightly uncomfortable or unremarkable, it is crucial not to overlook them. When done correctly and consistently, these exercises can help strengthen imbalanced muscles, expedite recovery, and reduce pain. Failing to complete your prescribed exercises means missing out on a significant part of your healing process.

#4 Prioritize quality sleep.
It goes without saying that we need sufficient sleep every day, not solely following an adjustment. Our bodies undergo self-healing while we sleep, and inadequate quality sleep hampers our body's natural healing abilities. If you struggle to achieve restful sleep, it is likely necessary to make changes to your sleeping environment. Sleeping on an excessively soft mattress or using an excessively thick pillow can place your body in an uncomfortable posture—a significant issue since your body is readjusting to proper alignment post-adjustment. To maintain this alignment, it is recommended to sleep in a healthy position. Opt for a firm mattress to keep your spine straight, and select a suitable pillow to align your neck and spine. Consult your chiropractor to determine the most suitable options for you.
