When talking about jaw pain, you often come across the term 'TMJ' being used to describe this issue. So, what does TMJ actually stand for?
TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint, which refers to a group of conditions causing pain and dysfunction in the jaw joint and the muscles controlling jaw movement. These conditions generally fall into three primary categories:
  1. Myofascial Pain: Discomfort in the muscles responsible for jaw function.
  2. Internal Derangement: Displaced discs, injuries, or dislocation within the jaw.
  3. Arthritis: Inflammatory or degenerative joint disorders affecting the temporomandibular joint in the jaw.
It's possible to experience one or more of these TMJ conditions simultaneously; they aren't mutually exclusive.

If you're facing troubles related to TMJ or jaw discomfort, seeking the expertise of a chiropractor is a recommended approach. Following a comprehensive assessment, a chiropractic practitioner will determine the appropriate manual adjustments needed to address your specific condition.

The adjustments for TMJ issues are notably gentle. Unlike the popping or cracking sensations associated with some other chiropractic methods, you're unlikely to experience the same sensations. Depending on the nature of the misalignment, your chiropractor might employ various types of adjustments, such as:

• Precise, hands-on release of nerves and soft tissues around the jaw
• Utilization of an Activator, a handheld, spring-loaded tool, to adjust the TMJ
• Targeted structural adjustments to the neck or occiput
• Prescribed jaw exercises aimed at strengthening the misaligned joint

These adjustments and soft tissue treatments are generally swift, comfortable (for the most part), and highly effective. They could ultimately alleviate your jaw-related symptoms and concerns
