chiropractic care & the psoas muscle

The psoas muscle, often referred to as the "iliopsoas," is a group of muscles located deep within the abdominal area. This muscle connects the lumbar vertebrae to the femur, making it a vital component of our core and hip region. The psoas muscle is responsible for various functions, including:
  • Hip Flexion: The psoas muscle is primarily responsible for lifting the thigh towards the chest, a motion known as hip flexion. This movement is essential for activities like walking, running, and climbing stairs.
  • Posture and Stability: The psoas muscle plays a critical role in maintaining proper posture and pelvic stability. A well-functioning psoas muscle can prevent problems such as excessive lower back arching.
  • Supporting Organs: The psoas muscle runs close to various abdominal organs, providing support and stability to the lower abdominal region.
  • Breathing: Surprisingly, the psoas muscle can even influence our ability to breathe. When it's overly tight, it can restrict diaphragmatic movement, impacting our ability to take deep, relaxed breaths.

Chiropractors are well-equipped to address psoas muscle issues, as they have a deep understanding of the body's musculoskeletal system. Here's how chiropractic care can help:

  1. Assessment and Diagnosis: Chiropractors assess the condition of your psoas muscle and identify any issues such as tightness, imbalance, or dysfunction.
  2. Adjustments: Chiropractic adjustments help align the spine and pelvis, which, in turn, can relieve tension in the psoas muscle.
  3. Soft Tissue Techniques: Chiropractors use soft tissue techniques such as massage, myofascial release, and stretching to alleviate psoas muscle tension.
  4. Exercise and Rehabilitation: Chiropractors recommend exercises and stretches to strengthen and lengthen the psoas muscle, improving its function and reducing the risk of future issues.
  5. Postural Advice: Chiropractors provide guidance on maintaining proper posture to prevent psoas muscle problems caused by poor ergonomics.

The psoas muscle may not be as well-known as other muscles in the body, but its role in maintaining our well-being is undeniable. Chiropractic care offers a holistic approach to addressing psoas muscle issues and maintaining overall musculoskeletal health. By consulting with a chiropractor and incorporating their guidance into your wellness routine, you can unlock the key to a healthier, more comfortable life, where the psoas muscle plays a supporting role in your journey to well-being.
