Correct Posture in the Workplace

3/6/2022

Are you aware that an office job can harm your health? Excessive sitting has been recognised as a serious health concern. If you must sit throughout the day, you should keep your posture in mind. Whether or not you have the correct posture at your desk is determined by workplace ergonomics. Here are some chiropractic tips for better posture.

Make adjustments for correct posture

Try to sit as close to your desk as possible and rest your hands on the work surface with your upper arms parallel to your spine. Make sure you have your elbows at a 90-degree angle by adjusting the height of your office chair as needed. Your legs should also bend 90 degrees at the knees while you do this. If you find this difficult to maintain, you should take regular breaks to get up, walk around and stretch.

Have the right chair

Ensure proper workplace ergonomics by looking at the depth of your chair. A chair's depth is the distance between the front of the seat and the back. It is crucial to have the proper chair depth to maximise circulation in your legs throughout the day. You can measure the distance between the front edge of the seat and your calves to ensure your chair is the proper depth for optimal workplace ergonomics. If you can fit your fist in that space, your chair depth is suitable.

Workplace ergonomics put a lot of focus on back support. Therefore, it is imperative that your office chair provides a back support angle beyond 90 degrees and should also have padding that pushes your back forward when seated. In turn, this will decrease low back pain as slouching is prevented.

Keep your computer level

Looking down at your computer for an extended period will cause more strain on your neck and shoulders. To maintain correct posture, you should place the computer 18-30 inches away from your eyes and tilt the screen 15-20 degrees.

It is advisable to keep the mouse within easy reach of the keyboard on the same surface. As you type or operate a computer mouse, your wrists should be straight, your upper arms should be close to your body and your hands should be at or slightly below elbow level.
