things to do after your adjustment

Opting to consult with a chiropractor represents a crucial initial step in enhancing your mobility and overall well-being. By taking this initiative, you set yourself on the path to restoring equilibrium, alignment, and relief from persistent discomfort. Nonetheless, the responsibility for achieving your health objectives doesn't solely rest with your chiropractor.
In addition to receiving adjustments at our clinic, you must also actively engage in enhancing your health and practicing diligent self-care. One critical aspect to remain mindful of is your post-appointment actions. Your subsequent choices will either enhance or hinder the effectiveness of your adjustments. If you aim to maximize your outcomes, it's imperative that you play your part. Let's explore the five recommendations typically provided to individuals following their chiropractic adjustments

#1 Maintain Proper Hydration
After an adjustment, it's crucial to maintain proper hydration. Why is this necessary? When you engage in movement and stimulate muscles and bones during an adjustment, the body often releases toxins. This can be likened to the body's natural process of eliminating waste. If you have a significant buildup of toxins in your system, it becomes even more essential to continually flush them out by staying well-hydrated.

To accelerate the detoxification process, the most effective approach is to boost your water consumption. Begin by having a glass of water shortly after your adjustment and maintain a heightened intake of water for several days after the adjustment. Once you've successfully eliminated all the toxins, your body can commence the healing process. At this point, you can return to the routine of consuming eight glasses of water a day to ensure proper joint hydration and optimal bodily function.

#2 Stay Active
Following your adjustment, you may notice a remarkable improvement in your mobility. Your shoulders and arms might now reach higher, and you could find it easier to stretch your neck or back. These positive changes are a result of your body adapting to its corrected alignment.
However, this phase represents a transition, and without caution, your body may revert to its previous, less favorable position. This risk is especially high if you lead a sedentary lifestyle and remain in awkward positions for extended periods. To safeguard your progress, it's essential to stay active. Engage in activities that promote mobility and flexibility. Incorporate daily stretches for your back, neck, and shoulders to maintain your newfound level of mobility.
Furthermore, practice good posture in all your movements. Train your body to adopt the correct position by being mindful of any awkward postures, such as slouching. Avoid prolonged sitting whenever possible, as it can lead to slouching over time. If your job or hobbies encourage prolonged sitting (e.g., desk jobs, painting), consider using a standing desk that allows you to switch positions throughout the day, promoting activity and better posture.

#3 Don’t forget your exercises
After your adjustment, your chiropractor may also recommend specific exercises for you to follow. These exercises may be slightly unpleasant or appear to be not doing anything special, but trust us, they are something you should not skip. These exercises, if done correctly and regularly, can help you strengthen imbalanced muscles, speed up recovery, and minimize pain. You’ll miss a big part of your healing if you’re not completing your exercises.

#4 Prioritize Restorative Sleep
It's evident that we need to prioritize getting quality sleep each day, and not solely in the aftermath of an adjustment. Sleep is when our body undergoes the crucial process of self-healing, and insufficient, low-quality sleep can hinder the body's natural restorative abilities. If you find yourself struggling with sleep quality, it may be necessary to make changes to your sleep environment.

Sleeping on a mattress that is too soft or using an overly thick pillow can force your body into an uncomfortable posture, which is counterproductive, especially considering that your body is readjusting to a proper alignment after an adjustment. To maintain this alignment, it's advisable to ensure your body stays in a healthy position even during sleep. Opt for a firm mattress that supports spinal alignment and choose an appropriate pillow that aligns your neck and spine. Consult with your chiropractor to determine the best options for your specific needs.

#5 Turn up for your next appointment
During your initial visit, your chiropractor will design a personalised care plan tailored to your specific needs. The duration of this plan can vary, depending on the severity of your condition, encompassing both short-term and long-term goals. Regardless of the plan's duration, we strongly recommend adhering to it until completion. There may be instances when you feel significantly better after a single adjustment, tempting you to consider skipping your next appointment. However, we emphasise this point once more—do not skip it. Missing an appointment can have adverse consequences.

Consistently attending your scheduled sessions not only helps prevent the risk of re-injury but also ensures that your mobility and alignment continue to function optimally in the long run. To maximise the benefits of chiropractic care and maintain the progress you've achieved, please continue with your visits and adhere to your personalised care plan.
