You've likely come across the term "pinched nerve," but what exactly does it entail?

A pinched nerve materialises when a nerve undergoes excessive pressure due to factors like neighbouring tissues—such as bones, cartilage, muscles, or tendons. This heightened pressure on the nerve hampers its proper functioning, resulting in sensations of pain, tingling, numbness, or even weakness.

The indications of a pinched nerve encompass:
  1. Numbness
  2. Tingling or pins and needles sensation
  3. Sharp, stabbing pain
  4. Persistent aching pain
  5. Weakened muscles in the affected area
  6. Shooting pain that travels along a limb
  7. Impaired coordination in the hands and feet
Chiropractic care aims to address a pinched nerve by employing non-invasive techniques to alleviate pressure on the affected nerve and promote overall spinal health. Chiropractors believe that misalignments or subluxations in the spine can contribute to nerve compression and related symptoms. Here's how chiropractic treatment approaches a pinched nerve:
  1. Spinal Adjustment: Chiropractors use manual spinal adjustments to manipulate the spine and restore its proper alignment. By doing so, they aim to reduce any pressure on the nerves caused by misaligned vertebrae. These adjustments can help create more space for the nerves to function without interference.

  2. Joint Mobilisation: In addition to spinal adjustments, chiropractors might use joint mobilisation techniques to improve the range of motion in affected joints. This can help reduce stiffness and tension that might contribute to nerve compression.

  3. Soft Tissue Manipulation: Chiropractors often use soft tissue techniques such as massage, stretching, and myofascial release to relax muscles around the affected area. This can help relieve muscle tension that might be exacerbating nerve compression.

  4. Posture and Ergonomic Advice: Chiropractors often provide guidance on proper posture and ergonomics. By addressing factors that contribute to poor spinal alignment, they aim to reduce the likelihood of nerve compression in the future.

  5. Exercises and Rehabilitation: Chiropractors might prescribe specific exercises and stretches designed to strengthen muscles and improve flexibility in the affected area. This can help support proper spinal alignment and reduce pressure on the nerve over time.
