why your tingling extremities need chiro care

Tingling in the extremities refers to a peculiar, prickling feeling experienced in the hands, arms, fingers, and feet. This sensation, also known as radiculopathy, involves temporary paresthesia, leading to numbness and tingling. If this sensation only occurs infrequently, it may not raise significant concern. However, if it becomes a recurring and uncomfortable issue, it could indicate a more serious underlying problem. Fortunately, a chiropractor can offer safe and effective treatments to address this condition.
Hand and arm tingling or numbness can be caused by a variety of factors.
Some common causes include:

  1. Pressure on Nerves: Compression or pressure on the nerves in the neck, shoulder, or arm, often due to poor posture or repetitive motions, can lead to tingling or numbness.
  2. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: This occurs when the median nerve in the wrist is compressed. It can result from repetitive hand and wrist movements, such as typing or using tools.
  3. Thoracic Outlet Syndrome: This condition involves compression of the nerves or blood vessels in the space between the collarbone and the first rib. It can cause numbness or tingling in the arm and hand.
  4. Herniated Disc: A herniated or bulging disc in the cervical spine can press on nerves, leading to symptoms in the arm and hand.
  5. Peripheral Neuropathy: Conditions like diabetes, vitamin deficiencies, or exposure to toxins can damage the peripheral nerves, causing numbness and tingling.
  6. Vascular Issues: Reduced blood flow to the arm can also result in numbness and tingling. This might be due to conditions like Raynaud's disease or arterial blockage.
  7. Infections or Inflammation: Conditions like Lyme disease or autoimmune disorders can cause nerve inflammation and result in these symptoms.
  8. Injuries: Trauma, such as fractures or dislocations, can damage nerves and cause numbness or tingling.

Chiropractic care offers two distinct approaches to alleviate pain, tingling, and numbness in the extremities. Firstly, chiropractic treatment prioritizes non-invasive, drug-free interventions as the primary course of action. Chiropractors strive to alleviate pain and address patients' concerns without resorting to surgical procedures or pharmaceuticals.

To determine if there is an underlying issue contributing to the condition, the chiropractor will conduct a physical examination. In cases of carpal tunnel syndrome, various treatment options may be recommended. Initial steps may involve gentle adjustments to the arm, shoulder, and wrist to potentially relieve nerve-related pain. Additionally, the chiropractor might suggest wrist icing to reduce inflammation and the use of stabilising braces, particularly for individuals in professions that entail repetitive tasks, such as typing.

Occasionally, instances of extremity tingling and numbness are initially misdiagnosed as carpal tunnel syndrome. In such situations, the chiropractor may trace the problem back to the patient's neck, as this is where the nerves that eventually pass through the carpal tunnel originate. Misalignment of the spine can also exert pressure on the neck region's nerves. Even if there is a pinched nerve in the neck, the resulting effects may manifest not at the point of impingement but rather in the elbow, wrist, shoulder, or fingers. Chiropractic care proves effective in alleviating pain in such cases.
